Financial privacy coins — research notes
Privacy-preserving cryptocurrencies (research only — not financial advice)
Monero (XMR) — Gold standard for on-chain privacy. Ring signatures + stealth addresses + RingCT conceal sender, receiver, and amount. CPU-mineable (RandomX, ASIC-resistant). Profitability depends heavily on XMR spot price, network difficulty, and your electricity rate. At $0.08–0.10/kWh, a Ryzen 9 7950X might net $0.50–$2/day. Check miningpoolstats.stream/monero for live estimates. Note: delisted from Binance/Kraken in several EU jurisdictions due to regulatory pressure.
Zcash (ZEC) — Selective privacy (shielded vs. transparent txs). Equihash PoW, GPU-mineable. Most txs are transparent by default — lower real-world privacy than XMR. Still listed on major US exchanges. Halving schedule similar to Bitcoin affects mining returns.
Firo (FIRO, formerly Zcoin) — Lelantus Spark protocol, technically rigorous. MTP mining algorithm, GPU-mineable, accessible to hobbyists. Smaller community/liquidity, but among the most serious privacy implementations. Lower market cap = higher volatility.
Dero — Homomorphic encryption on a DAG chain. Extremely private architecture, very niche community. GPU-mineable (AstroBWT). Experimental, high-risk, very low liquidity.
Grin (GRIN) — MimbleWimble protocol. No amounts or addresses on chain. High linear emission (60 GRIN/min forever, by design). Very illiquid but technically elegant.
Mining profitability reality check: For all coins, the margin between profitable and unprofitable is often just $0.03–0.05/kWh. Use whattomine.com with your actual hardware and real local electricity cost before buying any equipment. XMR has the deepest liquidity and most established privacy guarantees, but faces the most regulatory pressure. None of this is investment, tax, or financial advice.
